HGK Rail Operations stands for reliable rail freight transport within the HGK Group. With over 100 freight trains per day, our associate company RheinCargo transports about 19 million tonnes of freight each day. Our own direct connections ensure sustainable, efficient cargo transport in Germany and beyond into the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. Flexible regional transport and tailormade solutions for the on-site traffic at large industrial sites are also part of the rail freight offering.

Long-Distance Transport

Within the HGK Group, RheinCargo – one of the largest private rail freight networks – organises direct services across Europe and has its own operating licences in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Accordingly, it can offer seamless freight transport on the major freight links from Rotterdam to beyond the Alps with its own resources. RheinCargo’s modern electric locomotive fleet is powered by 100% green electricity.

Regional Transport

With a flexible offering and plenty of experience, our rail experts ensure direct connections between the ports and terminals to our customers’ premises in the region – and consider storage and processing at the same time if required.

In cooperation with our terminals we develop customised, efficient transport concepts for all freight classes, whether general cargo or bulk goods, liquids or containerised materials. Compliance with the highest safety standards is a foundational principle of our operations. We are experts when it comes to transporting sensitive goods, from mineral oil products and other hazardous goods through to recyclable materials for the recycling economy.

On-Site Traffic

Large industrial operations that process raw materials depend on internal rail systems for their intralogistics. At the same time, the legal and safety-related requirements for maintaining track systems and locomotives are growing. This makes operating them in-house a demanding extra task, beyond the core competences of the business. This is where RheinCargo’s experts offer support in the sector of internal rail systems. We not only provide the personnel but also the locomotive and wagon technology and we take care of all other aspects of the track system – maintenance, repair, control and safety systems. This service has already won over customers throughout Germany and from a wide range of industry branches, from steel to chemicals and construction materials through to mineral oil producers.

Reliable partner with a long tradition

RheinCargo GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 2012 as a joint venture between HGK AG and Neuss Düsseldorfer Häfen GmbH & Co. KG.

The services offered by RheinCargo include both the operation of six inland waterway ports in the Rhineland and a rail freight system with international transports.

An overall annual cargo volume of over 50 million tonnes on the rails and in the ports plus direct rail connections in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland make RheinCargo, in conjunction with HGK AG and its affiliates, a reliable transport and logistics partner.
