Hazardous Substances Logistics

HGK Logistics and Intermodal is growing with the inclusion of hazardous goods logistics and warehouse management for the top-focus chemical and pharmaceuticals industries. Our best example: At the Ladenburg site, near Mannheim, we have developed a modern, multi-user logistics centre. Here we offer a modern logistics service to customers in the chemical and pharmaceuticals industries to offer them long-term economic success.

In the construction and operation of this new logistics centre, priority was given to safety and sustainability. The equipment of the building and its safety infrastructure comply with the most state-of-the-art requirements for hazardous substances storage. A powerful photovoltaic system also enables temperature-controlled products, such as those from the pharma sector, to be stored sustainably and also cost-effectively.

Out of a total area of 50,000 m², 37,000 m² is designed for the storage of substances in compliance with the Technical Regulations for Hazardous Substances (TRGS).

We therefore use the latest safety facilities for hazard prevention and hazard combating, such as a modern sprinkler and foam extinguisher system. Special, permanently installed films secure the hall and loading areas against vulnerability to groundwater in the event of fire or damage.

The difference between hazardous substances (‘Gefahrstoff’) and dangerous goods (‘Gefahrgut’) and their impact

According to German law the terms ‘hazardous substances’ ("Gefahrstoffe") and ‘dangerous goods’ ("Gefahrgüter") arise from different legal contexts that govern the handling of potentially dangerous substances. ‘Hazardous substances’ are spoken of when it comes to the storage and handling of dangerous materials. When potentially dangerous materials are transported, the provisions of the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Act (GgbefG) apply, and the term used is ‘dangerous goods’.

Hazardous substances also include for example engine oils, antifreeze, paints and cleaning agents. The different hazard classes are defined by Section 3 of the Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (GefStoffV).

Professional storage in larger quantities demands the use of specially equipped and officially approved storage spaces. For these storage facilities, stringent hazard prevention (e.g. fire, gas and smoke detectors) and hazard combating (e.g. sprinkler or foam fire extinguishing systems) requirements apply.

Our hazardous substances storage facility, newly built in 2021, features systems that are state of the art. This also includes an ingenious store management system for checking the substance classes and quantities. This ensures that a maximum quantity per storage area of a given substance is not exceeded.
