Goods train services to the Mediterranean are being expanded

Container train now connects Cologne and Perpignan four times a week - Environmentally friendly transport relieves the pressure on long-distance road transport

Cologne. For around three months now, a regular containercontainer train has been travelling between the port of Cologne-Niehl and the Mediterranean. The train product connects the Westkai terminal of HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH with the southern French city of Perpignan. Up to now there have been three arrivals and departures of the "Med Express" per week. Following the successful start-up phase, the frequency has now beenincreased to four trains per week.

The intermodal service between the metropolis on the Rhine and the Mediterranean city in the immediate vicinity of the Spanish border is operated by "Transfesa Logistics", a subsidiary of DB Cargo. "The transport services have been well received by the market . We will be delighted if other customers also utilise the advantages of the sustainable concept in future and thus contribute to reducing CO² emissions," explains Rainer Görtler, Managing Director of HGK Intermodal GmbH.

The positive effects are obvious: semi-trailers and containers with a total capacity of 36 units can be transferred from road to rail per train. These would otherwise have to be transported by lorry and would cause a corresponding burden. Transport on the special pocket wagons, on the other hand, is efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Perpignan was chosen carefully as the destination and departure point. A large proportion of the goods transported to Cologne, such as automotive components or perishable goods, come from nearby Spain. The track gauge is different there. However, the use of the "Perpignan Saint Charles Conteneur Terminal" (PSCCT) in the directly neighbouring south of France eliminates the tedious "conversion" of the wagons.

In Cologne, the HGK subsidiary RheinCargo handles the so-called last mile of the trains from the terminal to the DB network and back.
