Cologne. The logistics industry generally requires a lot of energy to carry out processes such as transport, handling and processing. In view of climate change, it is all the more important that companies increasingly rely on electricity from renewable sources. HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH, a subsidiary of Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG, which is part of the Stadtwerke Köln Group (SWK), therefore only uses green electricity at its sites.

"We have a responsibility to make our logistics services as environmentally friendly as possible within the scope of our possibilities. We experience the effects of climate change on an almost daily basis. It is therefore a matter of course for us to rely on 100 per cent green electricity," says Markus Krämer, Managing Director of HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH, explaining the reasons. He adds: "Generating the electricity from renewable energies results in a saving of 1,523 tonnes of CO2. This also contributes to the City of Cologne's initiative to become climate-neutral by 2035."
The green electricity is supplied by Stadtwerke Duisburg. For quality assurance purposes, it is subjected to the strict criteria catalogue of the "RenewablePLUS" programme of TÜVRheinland. This means that the origin of the electricity is clearly traceable and fulfils the requirements of the green electricity label. All CO2 emissions associated with electricity generation (construction and operation) are determined and saved elsewhere through registered climate protection projects in accordance with the quality seal.
It also guarantees that the "RenewablePLUS" partners will invest in the expansion of renewable energies. This ensures continuous ecological improvements and a sustainable, climate-neutral expansion of renewable energies. "We are delighted to support HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH in its ambitious goal of becoming climate-neutral. Our green electricity is produced 100 percent in European hydroelectric and wind power generation plants and thus saves over 1,500 tonnes ofCO2 in relation to the electricity purchased by HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH and compared to a conventional electricity supply, guaranteed and verified," says Torsten Hiermann, Head of Sales and Market at Stadtwerke Duisburg.
"The decision in favour of green electricity also contributes to the City of Cologne's initiative to become climate-neutral by 2035."
HGK Logistics and Intermodal is also already focusing on sustainability in its own lorry fleet. In 2024, two battery-electric 40-tonne tractor units were purchased, which have since been in use at the Ladenburg site in Baden-Württemberg and are supplied with electricity from the photovoltaic roof system there. Based on the positive experience, the electric lorry fleet is to be further expanded in the medium term.
