Extensive construction works by HGK AG on city railway lines 16 and 17

Cologne. Starting 1 July 2023, Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG (HGK) will be carrying out extensive renovation works on city railway lines 16 and 17. Work will take place at four crossings between Köln-Rodenkirchen and Wesseling. Rails and sleepers will also be renewed. The work is expected to continue until 16 July 2023. During this period the city railway will not run between Rodenkirchen and Wesseling and a replacement bus service will be provided.

To enable the works to be performed efficiently and to minimise the impact on passengers, residents and traffic, HGK has grouped all necessary construction and renovation measures together. Additionally, the city of Cologne is using the service interruption to perform safety works on a bridge over the route in Köln-Michaelshoven.

The three crossings at Falderstraße, Mönchsgüterweg and An den Weiden in Köln-Sürth will have both the railways and roadways completely renewed by HGK. To enable these works to take place, the crossings must be completely closed to private traffic as follows.

  • Falderstraße from Tuesday 04 July 2023 to Saturday 08 July 2023
  • Mönchsgüterweg from Sunday 09 July 2023 to Thursday 13 July 2023
  • An den Weiden from Thursday 13 July 2023 to Wednesday 19 July 2023

The detours for road traffic are marked. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross. The crossing at Schillingsrotterstraße in Köln-Rodenkirchen is being given a new electronic control system. The existing system was installed in 1978. The technology contained in it is obsolete and has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Older elements must therefore be dismantled and replaced with modern components. The overall work at Schillingsrotterstraße will take longer and is estimated to last for four weeks in total.

During this time there will be alterations for all forms of traffic. When rail transport resumes on 17 July, a traffic light system will also be operating and guards will then protect the rail crossing. HGK AG will seek to keep the restrictions for the passing traffic to a minimum. People who know the area are nevertheless requested to use other streets where possible.

Further work will also take place on the city railway route during the stated period: In the area between Michaelshoven and Sürth, HGK AG is having the rails and sleepers replaced. Between the Heinrich-Lübke-Ufer in Cologne and Wesseling, point machines are also being replaced.

Cologne’s city drainage bodies (STEB) will also make use of the interruption to operations. During the night from 15 to 16 July 2023, a flood prevention exercise will take place from 3 am near the Heinrich-Lübke-Ufer.
