Extensive work by HGK AG on the light railway line 16

Cologne. During the autumn holidays, Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG (HGK) is carrying out various works on the light rail line 16 as part of a bundled measure. Rails, sleepers, points, catenary masts, cable routes and two railway bridges will be renewed between Cologne-Rodenkirchen and Hersel.

In order to carry out the work adequately, temporary closures of the line are necessary. For this reason, a rail replacement service with the line number "116" will be set up for line 16. From 12 to 20 October 2024, replacement buses will run between the "Rodenkirchen Bahnhof" and "Bonn Hauptbahnhof" stops - Stadtwerke Bonn will also be carrying out construction work during this period. From 21 to 27 October, the replacement bus service will run between the "Rodenkirchen Bahnhof" and "Hersel" stops(see separate press release from KVB AG).

HGK AG has bundled various measures in order to minimise the impact on passengers and limit the duration of the work. For example, two railway bridges built in 1904 are being replaced. Two steel troughs weighing a total of 70 tonnes will be lifted into place by a mobile crane.

In addition

  • more than 100 catenary masts replaced
  • more than 1,700 sleepers replaced
  • Two points renewed and relocated
  • 500 metres of track replaced
  • 8 km of cable routes replaced.

The underground cable construction is also the first sub-project for the renewal of the Hersel signal box. Over the next few years, the relay signal box from 1968 will be replaced by an electronic signal box together with the southern part of the Wesseling signal box area.
