HGK AG carries out underground cable construction work at four railway crossings in Bornheim

Cologne / Bornheim. In the coming weeks, Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG (HGK) will be carrying out underground cable construction work on the route of the light rail line 16 in Bornheim. Several level crossings will have to be temporarily closed for the construction work.

The level crossing system on Gennerstraße dates back to 1986 and the technology installed is now being replaced with modern components. The barrier drives are being completely replaced and the light signals are being replaced with energy-saving LED signals. In addition, new tactile fields will be installed on the pavement to improve accessibility for visually impaired people. A level crossing acoustic system will also be installed.

The construction work is related to the new construction of the signal box in Bornheim-Hersel. Some of the work will also be carried out at night. The following level crossings are affected:

From 19 to 23 January 2026, the Bornheimer Straße level crossing in Bornheim-Uedorf will be closed to all road users, including pedestrians.

From 26 to 30 January 2026, the Waldorfer Weg level crossing at Bornheim-Widdig station will be closed to motorised traffic; pedestrians will be able to pass.

From 2 to 6 February 2026, the Erftstraße level crossing in Bornheim-Hersel will be closed to all road users, including pedestrians.

From 16 to 20 February 2026, the Roisdorfer Straße level crossing at Bornheim-Hersel station will be closed to motorised traffic; pedestrians will be able to pass. A replacement stop will also be set up here for bus route 605 on the L 300 in the direction of Bonn in front of the station building.

Traffic on tram line 16 will not be affected by the construction work and HGK AG will endeavour to keep restrictions for all road users to a minimum. Local travellers are asked to avoid the areas during the construction work and to take alternative routes.
