thyssenkrupp Materials Trading and HGK Intermodal continue co-operation

Cologne / Duisburg. thyssenkrupp Materials Trading GmbH (TKMT) and HGK Intermodal GmbH are extending their cooperation in the transport of foundry coke ahead of schedule. By signing the contract, the two partners are emphasising their joint long-term commitment to sustainable transport.

The contract renewal ceremony took place on a ship in Duisburg harbour.
Signing the contract extension (from left to right): Jens Schmeidler, COO HGK LI, Markus Krämer, CEO HGK LI, Tim Hurka, Managing Director HGK Intermodal GmbH, Sebastian Kihm, Senior Head Foundry Minerals thyssenkrupp Materials Trading, Wolfgang Schnittker, CEO thyssenkrupp Materials Trading, Rainer Görtler, Managing Director HGK Intermodal GmbH.

HGK Intermodal has been transporting foundry coke from Walbrzych in Poland to TKMT's European customers for decades. On 10 September 2024, Wolfgang Schnittker, CEO of thyssenkrupp Materials Trading, Markus Krämer, CEO of HGK Logistics and Intermodal GmbH, and Tim Hurka, Managing Director of HGK Intermodal, signed the contract for the continuation of the cooperation.

HGK Intermodal has developed a specialised container, the so-called black-boxX, for the transport of foundry coke. The box reduces unnecessary handling and prevents contamination that would otherwise occur in bulk goods wagons. This enabled TKMT to shift all transport operations from Walbrzych to rail. "Efficient and reliable logistics is a key competitive factor. We are therefore delighted to have HGK Intermodal at our side as a trimodal player," explains Wolfgang Schnittker. "What is even more important is that HGK Intermodal is working with us on logistics solutions that are more sustainable and climate-friendly. We are delighted to be extending our successful collaboration."

"Cooperation in logistics is the key to success. We are delighted about the constructive dialogue with TKMT."
Markus Krämer, CEO HGK Logistics and Intermodal

Rail transport saves 87 per cent of CO2 compared to conventional truck transport. In 2023 alone, rail transport with black-boxX reduced CO2 emissions by 7,832 tonnes. "At the time, TKMT was faced with the challenge that transport by rail was not possible without compromising the quality of the product. This motivated us to develop the black-boxX for TKMT and has ensured a sustainable solution to this day," emphasises Markus Krämer.

Tim Hurka has been appointed Operational Managing Director of HGK Intermodal GmbH with effect from 1 June 2024. Together with Rainer Görtler (49), Head of Intermodal, the 42-year-old will be responsible for the HGK Group's terminal activities in Duisburg and Krefeld.
