100 years of Niehl harbour - HGK Group takes part in Cologne's Rose Monday parade

The HGK Group is taking the opening of the Niehl harbour 100 years ago as an opportunity to take part in Cologne's Rose Monday parade with a foot group. The group with the parade number 44A is made up of 60 participants, employees from all HGK business units and the associated company RheinCargo.

The first harbour basin of Niehl harbour was completed in 1925 - the starting signal for an impressive development: today, the harbour facility covers an area of almost 200 football pitches; it has been Cologne's largest and most important commercial harbour since the 1970s. Around 1,000 containers, trailers and loading bridges are handled in Niehl harbour every day. In addition, several million tonnes of general cargo and bulk goods are handled every year.

From raw materials to luxury goods: Countless goods cross paths in Niehl. When the motto of Cologne's carnival this season is "Wenn Dräum widder blöhe", then much of what can contribute to this arrives at Niehl harbour - "wo Dräum ankumme", so to speak.

The Group's costumes in the form of ships and locomotives not only reflect the entrepreneurial breadth of the HGK Group, which, in addition to the ports, container terminals and warehousing, also includes inland shipping and rail freight transport companies. The ports are the interface: all transport routes in freight transport intersect here like nowhere else.

The owner of the port of Niehl is Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG, the logistics company within the Stadtwerke Köln Group. From a former port operator, HGK has developed into a Europe-wide group of companies for integrated transport and logistics services with over 2500 employees.
