A really big thing in Niehl harbour: 320 tonne transformer effectively transported

Cologne. A heavy goods vehicle on the motorway, unable to overtake - and a long queue of annoyed road users behind it. That doesn't have to be the case, there is another way. Because longer distances can also be covered without traffic chaos - using the waterway system.

A transformer weighing 320 tonnes was handled in Niehl harbour.

This is what happened during a heavy goods transport between Bad Honnef and Oberzier. A 320 tonne transformer for the company Amprion was built in Bad Honnef and initially loaded onto a floating pontoon there. It was then transported around 45 kilometres by ship to the new heavy goods terminal at Niehl harbour. There, the transformer was lifted onto special wagons using a specially constructed mega crane. From here, the journey continued by rail to its destination in Oberzier. Apart from the so-called last mile on departure and arrival, no roads had to be used.
