Train Dispatcher

Train dispatchers for Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG work in the Infrastructure and Maintenance business segment.

Their place of work is at the network control centre of HGK AG in Hürth-Kendenich. There, the multi-person team works round the clock at a total of eight operating stations and ensures safe train and shunting operations on the rail network of HGK AG.

Tasks of train dispatchers

  • Monitoring and carrying out train and shunting operations
  • Accident reporting point II – emergency and incident management
  • Documentation of faults and incidents in the course of operations and entry of statistics in operational reports
  • Organisation of measures where deviations from the timetable are detected and in cases of faults or irregularities, in coordination with the shift supervisor of the network control centre.
  • Documentation of messages and customer and passenger information in cases of disruptions or delays

The role of dispatcher demands a high level of technical understanding, organisational talent, team and communication skills and resilience.

Our technical team carry responsibility for the safe transportation of people and goods, so making a substantial contribution to public transport, to maintaining and expanding the Cologne/Bonn industrial region and to climate protection.

Within the network control centre is the possibility of training as a shift supervisor and obtaining further qualifications. Further promotion opportunities are dependent on the development of the business.

A day in the life of a train dispatcher

Following the handover and the associated inspection of all necessary documentation, the dispatcher obtains a fresh overview of the operational situation.

Depending on their operating station, the dispatcher must observe operations and must intervene at his or her discretion in the event of faults or irregularities or must make active use of signalling facilities such as points or signals, for example in shunting.

In irregular incidents, the dispatcher acts as the accident reporting point and initiates emergency and incident management procedures. At the end of an eight-hour shift the dispatcher is replaced by the next shift.

Most importantly is working with your colleagues from the control room, technicians, train drivers, shunters and supervisors. Where necessary you will have to also communicate with the regulatory authorities.

Within the network control centre is the possibility of further qualifying as a shift supervisor. 

The collectively agreed holiday entitlement: 27 days in the first three years, then 29 days and after 10 years, 31 days per year.
