Cologne / Leverkusen. Following the failure of the control unit on the Fritz Middelanis Rhine ferry on 5 December 2023, the operating company "Rheinfähre Köln-Langel / Hitdorf GmbH" has taken the ferry out of service. This also applies to the period during which the A1 motorway bridge near Leverkusen is closed between 19 January and 4 February 2024.
"In order to clarify the causes of the accident, three expert opinions are required regarding the hydraulics, electrical control and on-board electronics, which are being prepared by different experts. Unfortunately, one of the experts has fallen ill, which is causing a delay," says Norbert Di Raimondo, Managing Director of Rheinfähre Köln-Langel / Hitdorf GmbH.
He continues: "As long as these analyses are not complete, operation is not possible, as we have to look at the system as a whole. There is also no alternative to pushing for the process to be speeded up. The safety of passengers and staff must be guaranteed. Another incident like the one in December would be unacceptable."
